Current Research Projects:

  • Modeling study of marine productivity and ecosystem service indicators (Exxon Mobile, PI, 2012)
  • Influence of Sea Ice on Arctic Marine Sulfur Biogeochemistry in the Community Climate System Model (U.S. Deptment of Energy/EPSCoR, co-PI, 2008-2011).
  • Sea ice-ocean-atmosphere coupled model for Earth Simulator (ES), and coupled physical biological model in the pan-Arctic Oceans (IARC - JAMSTEC funding).
  • Collaboration on in-situ observation, remote sensing and modeling in the Pacific Arctic Ocean (IARC-JAXA funding).

Accomplished Research Projects:

  • Modeling study on the response of lower trophic level production to climate change (NPRB, PI, 2006-2008).
  • Sea ice –ocean-oil spill modeling system (SIOMS) for the nearshore Beaufort and Chukchi Seas: Improvement and parameterization (Phase II) (MMS, co-PI, 2004-2007).
  • International Collaboration to Achieve Circumpolar Synthesis and Integration: fate of sea ice and arctic ecosystem feedback (NSF-ARC-0652838, 2008-2010).
  • Developing coupled ice-ocean model of the pan Arctic and North Atlantic Ocean  (IARC, 1999-2004).
  • Workshop on hydrological modeling for freshwater discharge from the Alaska Arctic coast (MMS, co-PI, 2004-2005).
  • Nowcast/Forecast Models of Ice-Ocean-Oil Spill System in the Beaufort Sea (MMS, co-PI, 2000-2003).
  • Coupled Ocean-DEM (Freshwater) Model in the Gulf of Alaska (Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Trustee Council, co-PI, 2002-2003).
  • 3-D Coupled Biological-Physical Model of Price William Sound, Alaska (Oil Spill Recovery Institute, Alaska, co-PI, 1999-2002).
  • 3-D Ocean State Simulations from 1995-98 in Prince William Sound, Alaska (Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Trustee Council, co-PI, 1999-2001).
  • Sound Ecosystem Assessment (SEA) project (1998-1999).

Outreach and education:

  • Presentation to students on 'Oil spill in Alaska' at Joy Elementary School, April 19, 2007
  • A graduate student is working on statistics of the model variables, climate index and fishery catch data in summer 2007.
  • I chaired a session in the 2008 Ocean Science Meeting in Orlando on March 2-7. Session 040: Ecosystem in sea ice influenced areas
  • I chaired session C52B: "The Sea Ice Ocean System" in the 2010 AGU Fall Meeting
